The U.S. Federal Government shutdown obviously didn’t affect just the U.S. Frankfurter Allgemeine, a newspaper from Frankfurt, Germany, commented rather wittily:

Wie nennt man das, wenn sich Akteure einen aufreibenden Kampf liefern, dessen Ergebnis genauso ausfällt wie es jeder von Anfang an erwartet hat? Schmierentheater. Das ist letztlich alles, was man über den Haushaltsstreit in Amerika sagen kann. Schlimm nur, dass es für das Land einen solchen Schaden bedeutet. Weniger die 24 Milliarden Dollar, die der Zwangsurlaub der Verwaltung gekostet hat, als die Desavouierung der amerikanischen Politik.

And a (poor) translation for the German-challenged:

What is it called when actors gruelingly skirmish, but the result turns out to be just as everyone expected from the beginning? Farce. Ultimately, this is all you can say about the budget dispute in America. The $24 billion is less a cost of the forced vacation than the disavowal of American politics.

The rest of the world looks at us with such disdain nowadays. Will we ever recover?
