Being in Germany at this time, wasn’t feeling particularly patriotic and inspired. This speech by Frederick Douglass, delivered July 5, 1852 to an audience of hundreds in Rochester, NY, certainly didn’t help my patriotism.

It’s astonishing how quickly we disregard our failings from the past.
